Climate Control can take several forms when you think about this for your property. It can be as simple as controlling heating (underfloor and radiators) or it can be more involved and include air conditioning systems, pool heaters and so on.
We are often involved in the integration of the MVHR (Mechanical Ventilation Heat Recovery) systems, ground source heat pumps, pellet burners and other auxiliary heating systems. The reality of these systems, and even your bulk standard boiler, is that they are a sub-system which looks after itself.
Typically the smart home integration means controlling the desired temperature in a room. The heating sub-system will then work out for itself how best to service this requirement (by turning on the boiler or the pellet burner or whatever else is necessary).
The one exception is the air conditioning system. Where we have a property with both, say, underfloor heating (UFH) and air conditioning (AC) we always advise integrating both into the smart home system so that we can ensure only one is switched on at the time. You wouldn’t want the UFH turning on to keep the room WARM at 22 degrees, at the same time the AC is turning on, trying hard to keep the room COOL at 22 degrees!
The benefit of integrating these systems, whether you have only one or both includes the following:
- The convenience of being able to control the temperature from your phone, even when you are away. Or perhaps, especially when you are away, so that you can turn the heating up on your way home.
- The ability to have your smart home system lower your set point for you when you leave your house from your smart home touch screen.
- Potentially a nice clean wall finish without thermostats cluttering the wall. Depending on your chosen system we can integrate the temperature sensors within your lighting keypads so as to reduce wall clutter.
Even if you were to go with a more basic heating system you will have to have one or more thermostats in your home. To “upgrade” these to a version that support smart home integration can be done at a very low cost so it would be a shame to miss out on this opportunity.
